For many patients, bariatric weight-loss surgery is the first step in the journey toward a healthier, more active lifestyle. And while surgery can indeed be a valuable tool in the process, patients must follow a strict diet in order to maintain long-term weight-loss success.
Following a gastric bypass, a diet is not only recommended following weight-loss surgery, it is crucial in order to avoid physical illness and/or discomfort as you navigate the weeks and months after your procedure. Patients that turn to poor eating habits after surgery may experience anything from nausea and diarrhea to dehydration, constipation, and even
weight gain. This can be dangerous, as it puts you at risk of additional complications, and can even undo the progress you’ve made on your journey.
By familiarizing yourself with the gastric bypass diet, you’ll have the tools you need to take charge of your weight loss.
Stay hydrated
Avoiding dehydration is important after weight-loss surgery. Drinking 64 ounces of fluid each day can help keep you well hydrated and healthy.
Drink carefully
While hydration is crucial, timing matters. Do not drink liquid with your meals. Rather, sip liquids between meals, and wait 30 minutes after eating before drinking anything. You should also avoid drinking liquids at least 30 minutes before a meal.
Take it slow
Eating or drinking too quickly can cause dumping syndrome, which can cause nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sweating, and even diarrhea. Eating and drinking slowly can help you avoid this. Chew foods to a pureed consistency for best results.
Focus on protein
Ingesting lean, protein-rich foods on a daily basis can help you maintain fat loss and energy levels.
Avoid fats and sugar
To ensure you are receiving proper nutrition, avoid foods and drinks that contain high levels of fat and sugar.
Skip the alcohol and caffeine
Alcohol can have negative effects as your body recovers from weight loss surgery. Try to avoid alcohol as you follow the gastric bypass diet. You should also try to limit caffeine intake, which can cause dehydration.
Take vitamins
Maintain your regular vitamin and mineral supplement intake under the supervision of your health care provider.
