Dr. Ernesto Garza Jr. is a distinguished general surgeon with an extensive background in medical education, training, and clinical practice. He is currently based in McAllen, Texas, where he has established a significant presence in the medical community. Dr. Garza completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Chemistry degree in 1998. Demonstrating academic excellence, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Elkins High School in 1995. Pursuing his passion for medicine, Dr. Garza earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2002 from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Following this, he honed his surgical skills at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, specializing in General Surgery from July 2002 to June 2007.
Dr. Garza holds a Texas State License (M0726) and has successfully passed the USMLE Steps I, II, & III. His surgical expertise is further validated by his passing of the ABS Qualifying exam in August 2007, with subsequent certifications in 2009, 2018, 2020, and 2022. In his professional journey, Dr. Garza has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, where he was recognized as a Center of Excellence Surgeon in 2019. He is also an active member of the Hidalgo County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and Baylor Society of Surgeons. Since October 2007, Dr. Garza has been serving at his private practice, Ernesto Garza Jr. MD Jr. P.A. General Surgeon. He has also contributed to Valley Care Clinics in General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery from March 2013 to March 2020.
Dr. Garza’s hospital affiliations are extensive, including South Texas Health Systems, Rio Grande Regional, Knapp Medical Center, Starr County Memorial Hospital, Mission Regional Hospital, Corner Stone Regional Hospital, and Solera Hospital. Notably, he has held key positions such as Chief of Surgery at Universal Health Systems (South Texas) from 2015 to 2017 and at Rio Grande Regional since 2022. He is also an Associate Professor at UTRGV since 2021 and the Trauma Medical Director at Knapp Medical Center since 2022.
